What is Pyrolysis? A Definition of a Heat Treatment Techonology for Ener...

In this video we will explain the definition of this process, which is used to extract energy from waste.

The non-technical answer is that pyrolysis is known to all of us in its initial stages, because it is what we can see taking place, during cooking.

Frying, baking, toasting and roasting, are all, to a varying degree “pyrolysis”. But, good cooks don’t take pyrolysis to its final stage, which is the production of char. “Char” as in burnt food!

Now for the scientific definition!

Pyrolysis is the thermal decomposition of a substance in a non-reactive atmosphere at high temperatures.

An external heat-source is applied to  maintain a temperature, which is typically in the range 300 to 850 Degrees Centigrade for Municipal Solid Waste, (which is also known as household and commercial waste).

The output from the pyrolysis process is a solid residue and a “synthetic” gas, which is known as Syngas.

Many people refer to the solid residue as char. The char from the pyrolysis of MSW is a combination of non-combustible materials from the MSW, and carbon.

The syngas is comprised of a number of gases which are either combustible or non-combustible.

These mixture of gases in syngas include: Carbon Monoxide, Hydrogen, Methane, and, other Volatile Organic Carbon compounds.

Some of the condensed VOCs which result are oils, waxes, and tars. Once they have been cooled to normal temperatures.

Pyrolysis can be used to degrade fossil fuel based chemicals, but, for the purpose of this article we are solely referring to its use in the treatment of renewable organic matter.

The hydrogen and methane present are immediately available as a gas fuel.

Volatile Organic Carbon compounds in the syngas can also be cooled (if necessary), to result in a liquid fuel which, when the source is MSW, is usually classed as being a renewable fuel.

This is often referred to as anhydrous pyrolysis.

This being the heating of a solid organic material in the required temperature range, without oxygen.

There is a distinction between anhydrous pyrolysis and hydrous pyrolysis which occurs where steam is present.

The anhydrous pyrolysis of wood results in charcoal (char).

Did you ever watch a piece of coal, or wood, as it descends into the hottest part of a fire and burns?

As it heats up, there is a short period when it is often possible to see small gas jets pouring out of the recently added logs, lit by flame intermittently at first and then become red, and orange-flamed hot embers.

All the while, the volatile gaseous compounds in the coal or wood in any ordinary fire are pouring out of the wood and only once the flames have gone, does the wood come into contact with oxygen in the air, char is further burnt (oxidized) and, in an ordinary fire, where plenty of air is present, a powdery ash is produced.

The meaning of pyrolysis.

Anhydrous pyrolysis is different, because there is, by definition, no air so, there is no oxygen present, with the result that so the remaining non-volatile carbon forms charcoal, and not ash.

Hydrous pyrolysis, using water can transform the waste matter into a liquid, with many similarities to a light crude oil.

There are companies that offer pyrolysis equipment that have developed their own “black box” pyrolysis systems, and some of those have optimized them by applying a vacuum to the process.

This lowers the boiling point, saving fuel, but also reducing or avoiding, some of the troublesome unwanted toxic chemical reactions.

Finally, before we end this video, there is a similar heat treatment process known as "Gasification". Gasification is also a heat treatment process.

It is essentially the same as pyrolysis except that a certain amount of oxygen is present during gasification to allow partial oxidation, producing “producer gas”:
Carbon Monoxide, Hydrogen, Methane in quantity, depending on the gasification temperature of the process the quantity of gas produced which contains methane varies.

6 House Clearance Chores a Rubbish Removal Company will Happily Do

House Clearance:

A Rubbish Removal Company will happily do more than just House Clearance!
Good UK waste companies and skip waste operators just need to be asked and provide a quote first.

6 House Clearance Chores a Rubbish Removal Company Will Happily Do

Here is our list of 6 House Clearance Chores your local rubbish removal company will do for you.

Not many people realise that good local waste skip companies are often willing to quote you a price, for additional labour.

They’ll give prices, not just for providing a skip and collecting it later, but for doing a lot more than that!

Don’t be one of the many who lift loads beyond their capability,. Excessive lifting could mean suffering back-ache the next day, or even, cause a chronic back-pain problem.

Keep watching for our list of, 6 House Clearance Chores they can happily do for you.

1. Garage Clearance

De-cluttering garages and car-ports is often needed.

It’s a fact of life that we use our garages to store items when we are too busy to take to our local recycling centre.

Other items get put there when we are not sure we won’t need them again. Garage clutter accumulates.

There's no room for the car!

If it becomes too much to handle, call-in the garage rubbish removal experts from your local clearance service who will clear the space quickly and efficiently.

Number 2. Loft Clearance

Emptying loft spaces in houses is an obvious task for calling in rubbish removal contractors.

Many people put-off clearing their loft and the clutter grows, not to mention the cobwebs and layers of dust!

Just leave that loft ladder where it is and call your local house clearance contractor.

For older people lacking the agility to enter cramped loft spaces, and balance on narrow, wood joists etc., this service is a must!

Number 3. Builder’s Waste Clearance.

Although most good builders automatically remove and dispose of their building waste, not all of them do, and some simply forget!

On top of that, DIY building work can produce a surprisingly large quantity of unsightly rubbish.

It’s heavy. It’s dirty, and may contain sharp objects to be very wary of.

If you have builder's waste to clear, and you are not a rugged guy or gal with a six-pack to exercise, just call a clearance company.

Number 4. 4. Shed Demolition and Clearance

Have you got a garden shed full of junk that needs clearing?

Are you moving house? Or, does the shed need emptying before knocking it down!

Clearance companies can make short-work of all this!

Number 5. Garden Rubbish Clearance

Do you blitz your garden, rather than garden every week to keep the undergrowth at bay? If so, you’ll be familiar with the problem of filling your green bin in 10 minutes flat!

The solution is to get a quote for garden rubbish removal.

Finally, number, 6. Household Rubbish Clearance

House clearance and waste disposal service providers offer household rubbish clearance.

It's what they do most, and they can quote you for clearing single items, right up to full house clearances.

That's our list of 6 waste chores completed, but before you go, here is a reminder to act responsibly, look after the environment, and watch out for waste Law!

Not every waste contractor is honest about where they dispose of your rubbish, and illegal fly-tipping has risen recently.

Every individual in the UK has a legal responsibility to observe their waste "Duty of Care".

"You have a legal duty, to care about where your waste goes."

This law is to ensure that your waste isn't simply dumped (fly tipped) in a quiet lane or field near you.

Be aware that UK residents should always check that their waste contractor is a "registered waste carrier", by going to the link: bit.ly/noflytip which is also given below.

When on that "Public Register" page, you should simply copy your contractor's UK Waste Registered Carrier Number which you get from the waste company website, and paste it into the EA's website where it says "Quick Check".

When the database search comes back and shows you, your contractor's correct address, you are done!

But, it's also wise to follow the Wyre SCRAP Code, and do keep a record in case you are later questioned by the authorities.

We hope you found this useful, and if you did, please Share this video, and subscribe!

How to Recycle Concrete Improve Materials Efficiency and Save Money.

The Value of Recycling Concrete

When frameworks constructed from concrete are demolished or remodelled, concrete reusing into brand-new concrete, is a progressively common technique of utilizing the rubble. As a matter of fact, in the UK in 2019 over 90% of demolition products consisting of concrete is currently being reused. And, the UK federal government is targeting his to rise still better, within the following 5 years.

The Stages of Concrete Recycling

1. Transportation as well as Acceptance at a Concrete Recycling Facility

Squashing facilities need great high quality debris to start with. They have guidelines on what they will approve from demolition websites, and they just approve unpolluted concrete.

If you mean to recycle your concrete make certain it is without basic rubbish, wood, paper as well as various other such products. Steels such as enhancing steel bars (rebar) are appropriate in the material.

2. Crushing as well as Sorting

Concrete aggregate gathered from demolition websites is executed an effective crushing machine.

The enhancing steel is launched and also eliminated with magnets after crushing. It is after that sorted into metal types, and also is generally sold to be thawed down for recycling somewhere else.

Various other sorting tools are made use of to eliminate percentages of unwanted contaminants. The staying aggregate chunks are arranged by dimension. Bigger portions may undergo the crusher again.

3. Grading

Image is featured image for our article on How to Recycle Concrete.
To sell the aggregate materials, the smashed concrete is more sieved over screens until heaps are developed of typical sized arrays for particles. Once graded, the accumulation is stored in stacks of the sizes which are defined by concrete mix-designers for usage in new concrete of a necessary stamina and also accumulation sizing.

It is then ready to be offered for casting right back into new concrete.

Landfill Gas Powers US Air Force Mission - Secure 24/7 Biogas Energy Use...

Gases from Landfills

The Air Force's first landfill gas generators went into operation in 2006 at HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah.

The facility includes three generators and produces 2.3 megawatts of electricity per year.

The Air Force's second landfill gas generation facility opened in 2013 at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska.

It houses five generators and creates 7 megawatts of electricity per year, the highest-producing single renewable energy project in the Air Force.

The Air Force Civil Engineer Center's Energy Directorate Has studied the Air Force Civil Engineer Center's Energy Directorate Has studied more than 600 recorded Air Force landfills to search for similar opportunities.

It's now seven years since the commissioning of the 2nd landfill gas facility.

The successful project, along with one at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, has saved the Air Force millions of dollars in power bills.

It's this type of renewable energy that increases resiliency for the Air Force facility energy program because it operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Landfills generate methane gas for an average of 30 years.

Once it tapers off, engineers will supplement the plant with natural gas to continue power generation.

Landfill gas is a complex mix of different gases created by the action of microorganisms within a landfill Natural gas (also called fossil gas) is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon gas mixture consisting primarily of methane, but commonly including varying amounts of other higher alkanes, and sometimes a small percentage of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide, or helium.

Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), also known as Sustainable Natural Gas (SNG) or biomethane, is a biogas which has been upgraded to a quality similar to fossil natural gas and having a methane concentration of 90% or greater.

5 Construction Waste Recycling Methods Which Save Building Costs

Building Costs Can Be Saved 5 By Adopting These Construction Waste Recycling Methods

Here are 5 construction waste recycling methods through which sustainable builders achieve recycling and reuse of building waste in construction projects.

1 – Segregating timber waste on site and sale for re-use

Large timbers from older or unique structures can be salvaged and reused as structural elements in new buildings.

Lumber to be reused as a structural element, would need to be re-certified by a lumber inspector first.
Some firms offer certified lumber inspectors that can grade lumber for use on site.

2 – Storing reusable bricks and roof tiles from demolition phase, for use in later phases.

Many people prefer the beauty of old bricks and roof tiles for new construction.

There are monetary savings in doing this, as well as the satisfaction of performing an environmentally friendly act.

3 – Segregating metal waste on site

Metal waste is generally categorized into Ferrous and Non-ferrous types.

Prices paid do vary month by month.

but for iron scrap are in the range £100 and £150 per tonne.

The value of non-ferrous demolition materials at the gate of a metal scrap dealer varies between £400 and £3,600 per tonne.

4 – Segregating paper and cardboard waste and baling on site prior to disposal

Image is our featured image for the "5 Construction Waste Recycling Methods Which Save Building Costs" video.
Construction waste includes a high proportion of packaging waste, especially during the fit-out stage.

If this was sent to landfill it would cost over £100 per tonne in landfill disposal fees at the gate.

By sending it for recycling you are unlikely to be paid much, but will save the landfilling charges.

5 – Test Soil Using ‘CL:AIRE’ and if Satisfactory Avoid the Material Carted Off-Site Being Considered to be a Waste

Clean soil from excavation can be tested using ‘CL:AIRE’ methodology and then if satisfactory be dealt with as “Material Transfers to be reused on another site”.

That means that a sustainable alternative to disposing of waste in landfill sites is then possible.

There are many concepts for reuse and recycling of construction and demolition waste.

These were just 5!

The Gas Flare Secret Why Flaring is 34 Times Better Than Not Flaring

Gas Flares and Why They Reduce Climate Change.

The Gas Flare Secret Why Flaring is 34 Times Better Than Not Flaring

A gas flare, alternatively known as a flare stack, is a gas combustion device used in industrial plants such as petroleum refineries, chemical plants, natural gas processing plants as well as at oil or gas production sites having oil wells, gas wells, offshore oil and gas rigs and landfills.

Keep watching to learn why gas flares reduce climate change.

Flare stacks are primarily used for burning off unwanted flammable gas released by pressure relief valves, for the following reasons:

1 - Flare stacks are often used for the planned combustion of gases over relatively short periods such as when carrying out new gas plant start-ups.

2 - During unplanned over-pressuring of plant equipment, including emergency breakdown of equipment.

3 - During plant shutdowns, which are usually for equipment maintenance.

4 - In the case of landfill gas, flaring is done when the amount and quality of the landfill gas is too low for economic use.

5 - To reduce climate change.

Methane's estimated global warming potential is 34 times greater than that of Carbon Dioxide (CO2).

Image is the feature image for the article on The Gas Flare Secret.
Therefore, to the extent that gas flares convert methane to CO2 before it is released into the atmosphere, they reduce the amount of global warming that would otherwise occur.

10 Deadly Plastics Found Most Often in Rivers and Lakes

The 10 Most Deadly Plastics Found Most Often in Rivers and Lakes

The 10 worst plastic pollutants in rivers and lakes ranked by prevalence are:

1 - Plastic bottles and lids.2 - Food wrappers (crisp packets and sweet wrappers).3 - Cigarette butts4 - Sanitary items (nappies, sanitary towels, tampons and wet wipes).5 - Plastic or polystyrene takeaway containers.6 - Cotton bud sticks7 - Plastic or polystyrene cups.8 - Smoking-related packaging.9 - Plastic straws, stirrers and cutlery.10 - Plastic bags.

The Plastic Rivers report, published today (8 April 2019) in association with Plastic Oceans UK, has analysed data from nine studies of freshwater sources across the UK and Europe, revealing the worst ten plastic pollutants in the UK’s rivers and lakes.

It ranked types of macroplastic by prevalence, focusing on consumer items and excluding items relating to fishing, agriculture and industry.

Plastic bottles are the biggest contributor to freshwater plastic pollution, followed by food wrappers and cigarette butts, the research found.

Much of the plastics focus to date has been on the shocking impact pollution is having on ocean species, but up to 80% of the plastic in our seas actually comes from rivers. Understanding the situation in freshwater environments is an essential but often overlooked factor in stemming the tide of plastic reaching our oceans.

The Plastic Rivers report shows that the products we buy every day are contributing to the problem of ocean plastic. Our discarded plastic enters rivers from litter generated by our on-the-go lifestyle and items we flush down our toilets. This throw-away approach is having much more serious consequences much more serious consequences than previously imagined, and the report shows really simple ways to avoid this problem and stop plastic pollution.

Source: CIWM Journal

Click the link above to see the full article, or go to CIWM Online and search "plastic pollution".

Worldwide reliance on disposable plastic packaging is overwhelming our planet.

By 2050, the oceans will contain more plastic than fish by weight.

Plastic pollution is toxic to human health.

Even babies are born pre-polluted.

Plastic pollution and climate change are parallel global emergencies.

Plastic is a petroleum product; to truly divest from fossil fuels, we must reduce our collective plastic footprint. via www.plasticpollutioncoalition.org

Why is Plastic Litter and Pollution Growing So Fast?

The world population is living, working, vacationing, increasingly conglomerating along the coasts, and standing on the front row of the greatest, most unprecedented, plastic waste tide ever faced.

Washed out on our coasts in obvious and clearly visible form, the plastic pollution spectacle blatantly unveiling on our beaches is only the prelude of the greater story that unfolded further away in the world’s oceans, yet mostly originating from where we stand: the land.

For more than 50 years, global production and consumption of plastics have continued to rise. An estimated 299 million tons of plastics were produced in 2013, representing a 4 percent increase over 2012, and confirming and upward trend over the past years.

(See: Worldwatch Institute – January 2015). In 2008, our global plastic consumption worldwide has been estimated at 260 million tons, and, according to a 2012 report by Global Industry Analysts, plastic consumption is to reach 297.5 million tons by the end of 2015. via plastic-pollution.org

Is More Recycling the Solution?

Not really. Recycling does not really address plastic pollution, since recycled plastic is "properly" disposed of. Whereas, plastic pollution comes from improper disposal.

Since the ocean is downstream from nearly every terrestrial location, it is the receiving body for much of the plastic waste generated on land. Several million tonnes of debris end up in the world's oceans every year, and much of it is improperly discarded plastic litter.

The first oceanographic study to examine the amount of near-surface plastic debris in the world's oceans was published in 2014. It estimated that at least 5.25 trillion individual plastic particles weighing roughly 244,000 tonnes (269,000 tons) were floating on or near the surface.

A Seriously Damaging Effect at the Bottom of the Food Chain

Because it comes in sizes large and small, polluting plastics even affect the world's tiniest organisms such as plankton.

When these organisms become poisoned due to plastic ingestion, this causes problems for the larger animals that depend on them for food. This can cause a whole slew of problems, each step further along the food chain. Plus, it means that plastic are present in the fish that many people eat everyday.

Most of the litter and pollution affecting the world's oceans derives from plastics. This is having had terrible consequences on many marine species, which can lead to consequences for those that eat fish and marine life for nutrients – including people. via www.conserve-energy-future.com

Sources of Ocean Plastic - Mismanaged Waste and Inadequately Disposed Waste

Mismanaged waste is material which is at high risk of entering the ocean via wind or tidal transport, or carried to coastlines from inland waterways.

Image shows thumbnail for our most deadly plastics video.
Mismanaged waste is the sum of material which is either littered or inadequately disposed.

Inadequately disposed and littered waste are different, and are defined in the sections below.

Inadequately disposed waste is that which has the intention of being managed through waste collection or storage sites, but is ultimately not formally or sufficiently managed.

This includes disposal in dumps or open, uncontrolled landfills; this means the material is not fully contained and can be lost to the surrounding environment.

This makes it at risk of leakage and transport to the natural environment and oceans via waterways, winds and tides. via ourworldindata.org

Construction Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs) - 5 Ways to Reduce Waste...

5 Ways to Reduce Waste and Save Construction Cost by implementing Construction Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs)

Here are our 5 Ways to Reduce Construction Waste Management Costs with Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs).

Waste Reduction Tip 1

Train Employees and Subcontractors in the Reasons for Operating Sustainably.

Employee knowledge and commitment are essential pre-requisites for high performance in waste reduction.

Waste Reduction Tip 2

Only Use Suppliers which will Accept Back Your Unused Materials.

Change your company policy to only work with suppliers that will take back surplus supplies when not used.

Change your company policy to only work with suppliers that will take back surplus supplies when not used.

Over 10% of materials delivered to construction sites are never used.

For example, left-over bricks most often get thrown into a skip and landfilled, or just buried on site.

Waste Reduction Tip 3

Use Excess Earthworks Materials to Contour and Landscape your Sites.

The amount of material which may be used in this way may be severely limited on congested inner city sites, but remains worth doing wherever possible.

Waste Minimization Tip 4

Use a Site Crusher to Reprocess Existing Concrete and Stone on site for reuse in the new Site Structures.

In the UK using site crushing plant to reprocess existing demolished site materials to re-use them again on-site is also becoming a standard practice.

Waste Reduction Tip 5

Think Creatively.

Examples would be the re-use a loved building facade or other features from the original building.

Concluding this video:

When savings are achieved, it is important to ensure that
the Site Waste Management Plan (SWMP) takes on board the principles of the waste hierarchy.

The Construction Waste Management System, once neglected and even seen as a waste of time, is now a central part of doing business for construction firms.

In this video we provide our tips for raising the effectiveness, and the benefits, from any construction company waste management system.

Keep reading this for our 6 tips:

1 - Lower the Amount of Produced Waste

Waste reduction is the most effective technique. It has for long been practised on construction sites.

For example, demolition rubble has always been used beneath site roads and as non-compressible backfill.

The big win here is to extend this philosophy further, and find site uses for other demolition materials.

2 - Efficiently Separate Waste Types and keep materials clean for maximum recycling value.

3 - Recycle Building Materials which can't be re-used without processing.

The recycling example which has seen rapid advances in the last 10 years, is the crushing of reinforced concrete to produce aggregate for new concrete.

4 - When designing new buildings construction companies should ensure that their designers consider how the building or other structure will be easily demolished with maximum materials re-use.

Looking ahead beyond that is the consideration of how recycling will be enhanced at the end of the life of the structures built.

5 - Ensure that the company selects Eco-friendly materials.

6 - Keep One Step Ahead of Legislation

The circular economy is coming.

The most successful companies will be those that look ahead and develop the methods to lead with innovations implementing the circular economy.

Much better to do that than trying to catch-up after new regulations are introduced

Conclusion

Image illustrates the title of this article on a better construction waste management system.

A competent waste management process may look like an expensive endeavor at the start.

But, in the long run it pays off in more ways than one.
Many have reported substantial cost savings!

Not only does an effective Construction Waste Management System improve your company's public image, it also helps you run your business more efficiently.

What does recycling waste mean?

What Does Recycling Mean?

Recycling, is the latest practice for promoting Green living.

It means a procedure in which you process used materials and use them to make new products to keep the environment healthy and pollution-free.

Recycling helps in doing the following things in this regard;

1. It prevents excessive waste of useful materials.

2. It reduces the use of new raw materials.

3. It reduces energy use.

4. It reduces pollution of air and water.

5. It reduces the need for waste disposal to landfills.

6. It is a good way to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

What can be recycled?

Many products are recyclable such as paper, plastic, scrap metals, glass, textiles, and electronics.

Why Is Recycling So Important?

Along with the appalling fact, that globally the amount of waste is increasing year on year.

The average household in the United Kingdom produces more than 1 tonne of waste each year which is a shocking amount.

This equates to around 31 million tonnes a year in the United Kingdom, this is the equivalent to the weight of three and a half million double-decker buses.

When all this waste ends up in the landfills, it becomes a cause of air, soil and water pollution because they contain various harmful substances.

Therefore, it is really important to dispose of the waste in an appropriate way (i.e. recycling).

The good thing you should remember is that up to 60% of the waste that ends up in the dustbin can be recycled.

Through a proper recycling process, unused products are recycled and reused for making new products.

Apartment Recycling of Waste Its Not Easy! Recycling Collection in Flats

As 88% of all brand-new residential or commercial properties in London, are flats. Plus, well as the portion of individuals in London living in flats is most likely to increase to nearly 50% by 2030, we can not overlook the obstacles that homeowners and also neighbourhood authorities are encountering in raising recycling from these residences.

For me, the start of a job is constantly collecting the information. This creates an excellent basis to begin thinking of enhancements or treatments. Information on the types of waste segregated in various recycling districts varies, and frequently requires some effort to obtain; it could be incomplete and also spread throughout various spread sheets as well as data sources.

This is very confusing for the flat dweller.

The collection information, that is, the variety of containers when they are accumulated, is commonly held by a specific group at the regional authority.

But regrettably, the needed information such as precise areas and also accessibility to the containers is harder to discover.

This could in some cases to the residents, appear practically like an urban-legend safeguarded by the flat's rubbish collection crew.

This experience has actually offered me a brand-new degree of understanding and also compassion for these locals and also particularly those that attempt to do the appropriate point.

I will certainly never ever once more claim that recycling is very easy. It is very easy unless you reside in a flat.

Fire dangers, chutes and also went down kerbs are likewise unbelievably crucial to find out about if any type of adjustments or enhancements are to be made to the solution stipulation securely.

Nevertheless, I assume that we have to go additionally in recognizing the settings where we are anticipating locals to make use of recycling solutions.

The look of a block and also estate, the illumination as well as the tidiness of the website are all helpful little details that will certainly aid us make enhancements.

I would certainly additionally perform empirical study to see just how homeowners walk around the recycling bays, and also exactly what facilities as well as services are offered in the location where citizens are most likely to be willing to bring their recyclables.

We were eager to utilize one of the most modern technology consisting of geo-coding the setting of the containers as well as services in addition to taping the courses the homeowners are most likely to take.

We've taken numerous photos as well as left no rock un-turned for the search of sign boards, as well as collecting various other information on exactly how citizens find out what waste types must be placed in each one of the recycling bins.

Throughout this study it struck me just how much flat owners are in fact asked to do to be able to re-use. In several circumstances they have to step down numerous flights of stairways.

Also these are usually to the rear of the block which is no place near their typical path out. Also, it is frequently dark throughout the winter season as well as at nights.

Contrast that to the kerbside resident experience where waste and also recycling is lifted out for them from the front of their residence.

Furthermore, the containers are usually complimentary if new ones are needed when the become damaged.

Also the instructions on how you can make use of the various recycling solutions abounds.

This experience has actually provided me a brand-new degree of understanding as well as compassion for these homeowners in flats, as well as particularly those that attempt to be conscientious.

I will certainly never ever once more state that recycling is very easy.

It is not really so very easy to recycle, if you reside in a flat!

Jailed Porthmadog skip hire owners 'banned indefinitely'

The skip hire business was storing more waste than it was allowed to on its yard at Penamser Industrial Estate.

A family who ran a Gwynedd skip hire business which breached environmental laws have been banned indefinitely from running heavy goods vehicles.

Siblings Patricia Gaffey, Michael Gaffey and Joseph Gaffey, of Porthmadog Skip Hire, were jailed in March for illegally storing waste.

They had taken over the business after their father, Joseph Gaffey, 90, retired.

Traffic Commissioner Nick Jones said they had "badly let down" their father.

He revoked their commercial vehicle operating licences, including their father's, following a public inquiry.

In a letter to the inquiry, Mr Gaffey's wife said her husband had left the running of the business to his children and he "trusted them to carry on the business" as he had done.

Family Waste Management - Recycling at Home and Our 'Recycling Nazi'

Nobody ever talks about what I call family waste management. That's about how recycling at home gets done, and I explain about our 'Recycling Nazi' which is of course my hubby!

We do our best to collect as many items as possible, in our daily lives, for recycling purposes. With that in mind, we keep a large blue recycle bin in our kitchen for that very purpose.

However, not everyone in our family is as diligent about recycling, as my husband is. We secretly call him the 'Recycling Nazi'. He rules our recycling with an iron fist. Woe to the person who mistakenly throws an non-recyclable into recycle bin!

My husband will hunt that person down and they will most certainly pay - getting a long lecture about taking the time to differentiate between items and how irresponsible it is to throw just any old thing into the recycling bin.

Of course in line with his commitment to recycling, he is also the one tasked with the responsibility of dragging the recycle bins out to the curb and retrieving them again, once the contents have been collected. Again, it seems my husband is the only one truly committed to the recycling schedule.

The collectors have a very hit-and-miss approach to gathering from the green bins and they'll often come earlier than scheduled or not at all. This sets my husband to scrambling trying to get our bin to the curb before the truck leaves, or conversely grumbling to himself, when our recycle bin sits at the curb uncollected for days on end.

Of course, my husbands efforts are well-placed, and no one can slag him for his commitment to the environment. In fact, all of us should really take a lesson from him. I'm sure if we all worked together, it would make the entire process run more smoothly for everyone involved. Unfortunately, today's pace of life is so hectic.

Whether at home, work or school, many people barely have time to think, let alone to take the time to sort through their recyclables and place them in the properly labelled recycle bin. However, if we can all try to think more long term, and think about where our planet will be in a few years from now, it just might make squeeze in a little extra time in our day for recycling.

In our house, we all have made more of an effort recently. My husband has given us several reminders about what is recyclable and what is really just garbage. He's also given us lesson on giving containers a quick rinse before placing them in the recycle bin and cautioned us about removing any sharp edges on our containers.

Every little bit helps, and feel that we are making some positive improvement in doing our part for the planet.

Although we may joke about my hubby's over zealous recycling mania, for the good of the planet he, and thousands like him, will (like it or not!) help save the planet.

Nobody ever talks about what I call "family waste management". It's really very important and it's about the nitty-gritty day to day life-stress. It's how recycling at home gets done, and I hope I have explained to you, in an interesting way, about our 'Recycling Nazi'. That's my hubby!

Environmental Conflicts and Landfiling

The requirement to manage leachate and rubbish heap gas will continue till the wastes contained inside a site don't have the potential to cause issues in their express location. In fact the pressure to maximize landfill gas and so improve the amount energy obtained from waste is bound to continue to rise.

This fact is emphasized by the Waste Rules and Environment Agency Allowing requirements, with dump operators being legally required to introduce and maintain long term aftercare regimes which, in the case of rubbish heap gas control and leachate management, may need to continue for many decades.

The period of time necessary for a dump to reach environmental stability is much related to the character of the wastes and the rate of the decomposition processes at work within the body of wastes.

It is a recognized fact the rate of stabilization can be maximized by raising the moisture content of the dump, but this is hard to do without permitting an area of saturation to develop within the landfill. This may result in several metres of leachate being allowed to develop above the basal liner.

Such an approach has serious benefits since it is much more likely that stable, methanogenic conditions can be established at an early stage, recirculation of leachate is formed simpler, and the techniques of leachate stabilization and dump gas production can be better controlled.

This conflict, which is a real one and not just unproven, must be addressed by the dump industry.

As the industry moves towards the theorem of "Bio-reactor" landfills it is necessary that the need to control the complex processes at work within the dump - especially in respect of leachate management and gas enhancement - doesn't finally conflict with, and so bias, the necessity to maintain the integrity of the engineered structure. This highlights the requirement for the rubbish heap scientist to work closely with the landfill engineer to reach an OK degree of compatibility.

At the end of the day the principal aim should be the protection of the environment. There's no reason why, with careful design, this target shouldn't be achieved while at the same time improving the benefit to be gained from picking up and harnessing a handy resource in the form of rubbish heap gas.

Leachate recirculation has amazing benefits by reducing the strength of the leachate, especially with a very young leachate where the free-of-charge anaerobic digestion it receives in such a rubbish heap as it bubbles thru the saturated layers is excellent pre-treatment.

Of course to achieve recirculation one basically has to have, if you like, a reservoir to pull on within the base of the dump and therefore by definition one would have some standing leachate level there to tug on. The other point naturally is another, in a way, problem that is that of the hydraulics of heavily compacted waste at the base of a dump, which is truly attempting to get water to pass thru such waste in a controlled demeanour is a hard one which neither the industry or its regulators have got to grips with yet.
